Watercolors
Watercolor is a type of painting that uses a color pigment suspended in water. Colors and images are built up using negative space or layers of colored washes. Various techniques are also used to create effects.
Vocabulary
Glazing - overlaying/stacking transparent washes
Gradient/Gradation - slowly transitioning from one color to another or from a shade to a tint
Gum Arabic - the binder used in watercolor paints; can be added to increase gloss and transparency
Masking - special fluid or other substance used to block out parts of the paper to keep them white
Opaque - cannot be seen through; hides what is underneath it
Pigment - the color element in paints; a substance used to color something
Transparent - can be seen through
Undercoat - a thin, usually very diluted, transparent wash of a color to provide a base to build other colors
Wash - a semi-transparent layer of color
